Jewish Greenwich: FAQ

Where do Jews live in Greenwich?
Jews live everywhere, from downtown to back country, western to eastern Greenwich. Unlike many other towns and cities, there are no predominately Jewish neighborhoods. Our members tell us that the synagogue is even more important in a community like Greenwich because it is one of the few gathering places where Jews can feel a strong sense of Jewish identity.

What is it like living in a community that is not primarily Jewish?
One of the best ways to be connected with other Jews is to get involved at GRS. Our community is incredibly warm, diverse, and inclusive. We have many members who have moved from New York City, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, who would be happy to chat with you about their experiences living in Greenwich. Although GRS is the only Reform congregation in Greenwich, our town also has a vibrant UJA-JCC, Jewish Family Services agency, and other synagogues.

Are there Jewish delis and restaurants in Greenwich?
Yes! Greenwich and Delancey is a kosher takeout and sit down restaurant just off Route 1 with traditional Jewish foods. Great fresh-cut lox can be found at Greenwich Fish and The Lobster Bin, and Lenny’s and Upper Crust bagels both have great bagels and bialys. Gold’s Delicatessen in Westport has awesome pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, plus all the traditional foods. Closer to town, the Stamford Diner sells great matzo ball soup if you’re under the weather. Finally, there’s Falafel Taco on Greenwich Avenue if you’re craving for Israeli cuisine.

I keep kosher – where do I buy kosher meat?
Trader Joe’s in Stamford carries kosher meat, as does Wegman’s in Harrison.

Do you know any real estate agents?
Yes, we do. GRS has many members who are local real estate agents. For their contact information, contact Admin@GRS.org or call the office at 203-629-0018.

What about schools? Which schools are the best?
GRS has children attending every school in the area – public and private. We would be happy to put you in contact with members of GRS who can share with you their experience with the schools. If you are interested, contact Admin@GRS.org or call the office at 203-629-0018.

Are you planning a trip to Greenwich?
Would you like to meet with someone at the synagogue? A member of our Membership committee would love to spend some time with you. Contact Admin@GRS.org or call the office at 203-629-0018.

Young families please note:  Our growing synagogue has many young families and a thriving religious school. Our children love to be at GRS with their “GRS friends.”  On Friday nights, they run to the bimah to sing along with the Rabbi and Cantor.  This is a source of pride for us all (not just the parents!) and a testament to our clergy and the truly welcoming and loving community of GRS.
